At Crüe Fest, Papa Roach sets a bluesy tone
12:00 AM CDT on Friday, July 25, 2008

Rock 'n' roll has always encompassed a significant chowderhead coefficient: After all, it explains the mullets, the trucker wallets, the Camaros and Night Ranger.

It also explains Thursday night's Crüe Fest, which took stalwart, formerly debauched hair rockers and umlaut enthusiasts Mötley Crüe and put them at the top of a hard-rockin' bill that also included Papa Roach and Buckcherry.

Approximately 11,000 fans (including substantial walk-up traffic) gathered to marvel at a lineup in which Papa Roach was the most interesting band.

Papa Roach is typical of a trend in which a group makes its name with rap influences, then gradually drops them (Helloooo, Uncle Kracker! Now go away.), but its blues-based chops are still thick and greasy enough to deliver something approaching soul.

LOVED THE SHOW, went mainly to see Buckcherry, but ending up loving all of the bands. It was so great, so worth the tickets, the drive 200 miles, and all the money I spent while I was there. Trapp & Sixx AM great vocals. Papa Roach so surprised me, they were great. And to all who say Buckcherry was giving lame performances - in Dallas, TX - we all believe you must have been to stoned. AWESOME - loved BUCKCHERRY. Motley Crue's performance was the icing on the cake. Had a blast and can't wait till next year.
Fantastic concert! Missed Trapt & Sixx A.M. due to the early start time but Papa Roach was much better than aniticipated. In fact, they outperformed Buckcherry (whose vocals were under miced). No real surprise here with Buckcherry only getting a mild arousal out of the crowd compared to Pappa Roach. Not knowing what to expect from them, and much to my surprise Papa roach not only gave an energetic performance, but should indeed be the "pre- Crue" band on the bill. MOTLEY CRUE... what can be said about a bunch of almost high school graduate knuckleheads who rise from poverty, try to kill themselves with drugs, alcohol and every other vice under the sun to become rock legends? Their music may not be particularly cerebral, but is that what we really expected anyways? Motley provides the perfect escape from everyday life with their in your face brand of rock. The chunky guitar riffs, snotty vocals & infectuous grooves of Tommy and Nikki working in concert with one another are what have allowed them to sell over 80 million albums! The big unknown with the Crue is most often Vince's performance, but he sounded as good as he ever has with the band firing on all cylinders! A show that spread across a terrificly diverse demographic and well worth the money. For those of you naysayers who want complex arrangements and over produced "live" concerts... listen to the mathmatics of jazz or pull out your ipods for the next "pop star" concert. For me, give me some sloppy rock n roll and pass me another beer, thanks for being rock stars!
