| Foo Fighters flex arena-rock muscles by David Lindquist The Foo Fighters hit their stride Wednesday at Conseco Fieldhouse during a rendition of "Young Man Blues," a song written by piano man Mose Allison in the 1950s and claimed by the Who for 1970's landmark "Live at Leeds" album. It's no surprise that the Foos' effort mirrored the work of the Who -- rock's ultimate masters of mixing power and melody. Dave Grohl whipped his hair throughout a cathartic guitar freakout shared with band mate Chris Shiflett, while the band's rhythm section of drummer Taylor Hawkins and bass player Nate Mendel raced at a runaway pace. The Foo Fighters paid tribute to the Who this summer at a VH1 "Rock Honors" event, and the lyrical message of "Young Man Blues" has yet to go out of style. "The old man has all the money," Grohl howled. The 39-year-old Virginia native saw fans his own age and younger when he surveyed the estimated audience of 10,000. Because the Foo Fighters were making their first appearance in Indianapolis since 2000, it wasn't necessarily fair when Grohl chided people who were catching the band for the first time.. |
