| Review: Tom Petty at Sprint You know it's going to be a great night when, 30 minutes into the show, Tom Petty sings "Free Fallin' " -- an arena anthem worthy of finale status. Or when a guy who has been in a well-known local band that has toured the world says: "This is so good I'm peeing my pants." Or when the volume of the crowd's sing-along competes with the band's noise during a song like "Listen To Her Heart." The music industry has few givens or guarantees left up its sleeve these days, but this one seems like a lock -- as sure as there is sun, sand and notorious crime in Florida: When Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers show up to play, the room they're in will turn a brighter shade of jubilant. Tuesday night, a huge crowd showed up at Sprint Center to watch and listen to Petty and his opener, Steve Winwood. I was at all nine Garth Brooks events last year, and, trust me, the fervor of this show equaled at least a half-dozen of those. The difference: Garth hadn't been on tour for a decade. Petty was in town just three years ago. So something else was going on. Of the nearly 14,500 or so seats that were available, I'd say 95 percent were occupied -- most of the time. This wasn't a standing-room only crowd but it was a stand-up show: Sing it and dance if you know it; fake it and dance if you don't. And that's pretty much what everyone did for most of the three hours. Petty brought another classic-rock hero with him: Winwood, whose hour-long set was a mix of solo material, like "Higher Love," and songs pulled from his impressive band resume, like "Can't Find My Way Home" (Blind Faith) and "Dear Mr. Fantasy" (Traffic). He closed with "Gimme Some Lovin'" (Spencer Davis Group), a song that is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its inclusion in "The Big Chill" film soundtrack. The crowd -- a mix of fans from 10 to 70 -- reacted like it was in the Top 10 of today's Top 40 chart.. |
