| Petty set stirs giddy aura, classic enthusiasm By Ross Raihala Pop Music Critic Article Last Updated: 07/23/2008 11:49:26 PM CDT Festivals and amphitheater gigs dominate Tom Petty's summer tour schedule with the Heartbreakers, but Wednesday night, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer managed to bring the freewheeling aura of the outdoors into the Target Center. The manic energy of the sold-out crowd of 15,000 certainly helped matters, but it was ultimately Petty's straightforward, infectious and memorable rock anthems that made it one of the summer's most giddy arena shows. The 57-year-old Petty and his band weren't much to see — they still look like skinny high-school guys who wear Copenhagen tin hats and don't shower after gym — and the stage offered little in the razzle-dazzle department, with some dingy, washed-out big screens ringing the top of the stage. Again, it was all about Petty's songs. Opening number "You Wreck Me" set the pace for the night, with the crowd kicking in backing vocals for the first of many numbers. Big hits dominated, from 1978's "Listen to Her Heart" to 1989's "I Won't Back Down." Petty kept the stage patter to a minimum, introducing "Free Fallin' " as "a slow song" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" as "a rock 'n' roll song," with fans screaming in instant recognition upon the first note. He also found time to work in the Traveling Wilburys' track "End of the Line" and, during the encore, Van Morrison's garage-rock classic "Gloria.". |
