| James Taylor plays well with others By GENE STOUT P-I POP MUSIC CRITIC In a laid-back, sold-out concert Monday night at Chateau Ste. Michelle, James Taylor shunned some of his greatest hits in favor of a mellow selection of country, R&B, soul and Broadway classics. But there were still plenty of old favorites for the faithful: "You've Got a Friend," "Steamroller Blues," "Carolina in My Mind" and "Your Smiling Face." Dressed casually in blue shirt and faded jeans, the iconic singer-songwriter and his Band of Legends -- featuring such musicians as percussionist Luis Conte, keyboardist Larry Goldings and saxophonist Blue Lou Marini of the "Saturday Night Live" band -- kicked off the nearly three-hour performance with the Temptations' hit "It's Growing" and the Silhouettes' "Get a Job." Taylor wryly suggested the title of the latter tune might be a sensitive matter in these economically challenging times, bringing laughter from the capacity crowd sprawled across the lawn on a sunny evening. The current Legends tour coincides with his upcoming album of "cover songs," or songs made famous by others. Taylor performed a second sold-out concert Tuesday night at the Chateau. Taylor's official tour T-shirt featured an eye-chart design on the back, perhaps as a humorous acknowledgment that his vision -- and that of his fans -- isn't as sharp as it once was. . |
