Bryan Adams Hits Stride At Toad's
By ERIC R. DANTON | Courant Rock Critic
May 7, 2008

All it took was the opening notes to "Summer of '69" for everyone at Toad's Place Monday to become 17 again.

The wistful anthem came halfway through Bryan Adams' (mostly) solo-acoustic show, on a tour intended to hype his forthcoming album, "11," which is due Tuesday. As with any singer who has been around as long as Adams has, though, the old songs were the real draw.

He didn't disappoint, either, as he mixed in plenty of hits to counterbalance the new material he said he was performing "more or less how the songs are written" — that is, on an acoustic guitar. "Tonight will be a little like watching me in my living room," he said. "Except a lot stinkier."

The distinctive bouquet of rock club didn't outwardly offend any of the 500 or so in attendance, people who can sing along to all the old stuff and have never felt the need to qualify their enjoyment of his music as a "guilty" pleasure.

Adams does sometimes verge on cheesy, but he certainly knows how to write a hook. Although they rarely deviated from the straightforward formula he's used to such great effect for nearly 30 years, many of his new songs were as catchy as his best-loved material, suffering only from their lack of familiarity alongside his biggest hits..
