| Mixing the Genres, Matching the Sounds By KELEFA SANNEH Published: October 11, 2007 “This next song is probably the most positive song I’ve ever written.” At most concerts that announcement would be cause for concern. But at a Kid Rock concert it’s cause for alarm. It means the guy who once rhymed “bottle of scotch” with “lots of crotch” is about to get serious. No matter. Irving Plaza was filled to bursting with well-beveraged fans progressing through the three stages of concert excitement: cheering, whooping, high-fiving. Tuesday’s concert was a celebration for Kid Rock’s new album, “Rock ’n’ Roll Jesus” (Atlantic), and it certainly felt like one. Even that “positive” song, “When U Love Someone,” eventually morphed into a rowdy celebration. The question, sung from the stage: “Do you believe that rock ’n’ roll can save your soul?” The answer, shouted from the crowd: “Whooo!” Kid Rock certainly makes it easy for people to underestimate him. He has cultivated the image of a shirtless, cigar-chomping party boy, inordinately proud of his own decadent lifestyle. And in recent years he has been more prominent in the gossip pages than on the radio. He was briefly married to Pamela Anderson in 2006, and at the recent MTV Video Music Awards he scuffled with Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, another former husband of Ms. Anderson. The fans at Irving Plaza were happy to pick sides: to call Kid Rock back for an encore, they struck up a chant that pithily expressed their disdain for Mr. Lee. When Kid Rock is in a melancholy mood, perhaps he reflects upon the perfidy of concertgoers: How many of these beefy young men would be equally happy to denounce Kid Rock at a Mötley Crüe show? . |
