Upbeat, Driving Show From Keith
By THOMAS KINTNER | Special to the Courant

Toby Keith is a big-picture type when you get right down to it, not much for finesse, but with an undeniable strength for finding flair in outsized, catchphrase-laden anthems. His show Sunday night before a big crowd at the Dodge Music Center in Hartford was a case in point, a high-octane evening of rowdy tunes writ large, where spectacle was the goal and nuance could find little purchase.

Fireworks and confetti were mainstays of a show built to be an upbeat extravaganza from the moment Keith and his 10-piece band emerged from behind a plummeting curtain and rolled into the driving pop rock of "Big Dog Daddy." Keith was most at home with lyrics he could accent with a growl, such as "Honkytonk U" and the friendly, playful hook of "Stays in Mexico."

The 46-year-old Oklahoman was as recently as a few years ago a stone-faced stage presence who offered little enticement to live fans, but he has taken positive steps in his presentation over the years. He hid behind an acoustic guitar while strumming it aimlessly through the relaxed "I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight," but shifted into a more expressive mode to ride the hearty sway of "Whiskey Girl" and the barroom nostalgia of "As Good as I Once Was."

The three-piece horn section spruced up tunes such as the rough-hewn party groove "Get Drunk and Be Somebody," and ladled bleating brass punctuation onto "I Wanna Talk About Me" that complemented Keith's percussive vocal delivery. Robust plays such as "Who's Your Daddy" and the grabby "Should've Been a Cowboy" were most frequent, but Keith made a couple of interesting gear shifts, most notably for the mellow, atypically earnest "Love Me if You Can" and a stripped-down, acoustic "Runnin' Block" in which the tune's fiddle and dobro had room to be heard.

Really enjoyed the show--fabulous. My only complaint was he was a little vulgar, and that spoiled the show a bit.
A night I'll never forget. We got Toby, the bad boy, that night. And you know how good he is when he's bad.
