| In concert, Toby Keith emphasizes patriotism, partying, and hims By Jonathan Perry, Globe Correspondent | September 24, 2007 MANSFIELD - The mock action-movie preview and truck sponsorship tie-in that flashed across the video screens before Toby Keith blasted onto the stage amid explosions of pyro and a hail of commemorative tickets said a lot about how the singer's fans see him, and how he sees himself: as both invincible superhero and unrepentant blue-collar redneck. The advertisement was a triumph of product placement - Keith being one of the two pieces of merchandise being peddled - although the 46-year-old country superstar needed no help when it came to self-promotion. "I Wanna Talk About Me," one of the nearly two dozen songs Keith delivered during a boisterous two-hour set at the Tweeter Center Saturday, was redundant. Celebrating himself is what the self-described "Big Dog Daddy" (both the title of his latest album and the old-fashioned, Chuck Berry-style rocker he opened with) did most often - except, that is, hawking his love it-or-leave-it brand of patriotism for what he dubbed "Team USA." Nevertheless, when Keith sang "American Soldier," an affecting ballad honoring dedication to duty and the cost of human sacrifice, and then invited several troops on stage, it was a poignant moment. So was "Love Me If You Can," a surprisingly tender number that served as a response to the controversy that's followed Keith in the wake of his post-9/11 anthem (which closed the show), "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American).". |

I was never a Toby Keith fan, Bon Jovi has always been my absolute favorite. My mother however, is a HUGE Toby Keith fan and with my father having been very ill and she having no one that wanted to go with her, well I went. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. He is enthusiastic, entertaining, has a great camaraderie with the audience and just seems like a really great all around guy. I am hooked and have bought his Greatest Hits CD since the concert and will most certainly catch his concert again next summer.
toby kieth is one of the best preformers out there today. his concert at the tweeter center sept22 was just awesome. his patriotic act is no joke i felt really good when it was over.a real sense of pride in my country and a great apprecition of our brave troops over seas. i believe its a must see event and will certainly see it again.from Billy P framingham ma
He is the best because he sings it, tells it and gives the audience what they want. There is an unexplainable energy that is experienced at his concerts. Mansfield was my first Toby concert. My husband who it took a week for me to convince to go w/ me. He is no country music fan but he was amazed. He said this was his first concert he had been to that people were up on their feet from beginning to end singing and dancing. He admitted that he had a good time.
He was absolutely wonderful and this was a terrific venue. He voice is unmatched.
