| Keith delivers what the crowd wants By Jeff Miers NEWS POP MUSIC CRITIC In Toby Keith’s world, American men and women fight overseas in a dubious series of wars so Americans can be free to wear denim shirts with the sleeves cut off, bad mullets and straw cowboy hats. If they happen to be able to hold a tune and lift weights to boot, well, all the better. Maybe you’ll be a millionaire someday, boy. It’s hard to take Keith seriously as an artist when he so often drapes himself in the American flag and makes it clear that, in his estimation, when Jesus comes back, he’ll be driving a gas-guzzling Ford truck. Keith commands a huge following with his refried country-rock, bluesy folk and straight-up ripoffs of old rock ’n’ roll tunes. That following was out in full force Friday, as Keith played before a capacity crowd of vociferous fans, most of whom seemed to have taken every lyric to heart, and nearly all of whom seemed to believe that paying the cost of admission entitled them to a full-volume sing-along. (Which, of course, it did.) Keith and his band — which, it must be said, is simply stellar, though he keeps them so reined in that it hurts — brought their “Big Dog Daddy” tour to Darien Lake on Friday, and once the Ford commercials ended, took the stage with the title tune, a straight-up lift of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.” Keith is not the first to do this, but he is certainly the least imaginative.. |

| Supposedly he supports the troops, really? No, really? My son has been in Iraq for months, has 10 more to go. Home on 18 day leave. Flew for 4 days from Baghdad to Kuwait, to Ireland, to Atlanta, to home in Buffalo, in his combat uniform. Went to the TK concert at Darien Lake. His Mother in Law busted her arse to get back stage passes. So in support of the troops he spent less than a minute with my son, would NOT allow pictures, or any autographs, and took a BS pic, that they will email to my son. WTH? Is this what you call support? I have local Vietnam Vets who have done more, and never met my son. Well guess pretending is the same, if you really believe it. Guess he had to leave to make more money in Albany. Gonna burn my TK CDs this Labor Day Weekend. Support the troops? Yeah right. Don’t care for them, but the Dixie Chicks would probably have spent more time with my son! |
