| Michael Bublé is a paler shade of Ol' Blue Eyes Review: The enjoyably derivative jazz-pop hunk's first of three sell-outs at the Greek plays like Sinatra lite. By BEN WENER The Orange County Register Squeals are like snowflakes – no two are exactly alike. Yet history has shown that, when the female of the species is presented with pop phenomena at a particular age, the seemingly infinite number of individual squeals elicited can nonetheless be classified into two distinct categories. There is the terrifying sound one might have encountered at, say, the recent "High School Musical 2" premiere party at Disneyland. Utter hysterics, I mean, blood-curdling shrieking from very young girls – and at such an insane volume it can sound as though dentist's drills are boring directly into your ear canals. Ah, but then there is the fairer squeal – the romantic squeal that erupts unexpectedly out of women, not girls. True, romantic squeals are produced by all manner of instigators, from Justin Timberlake to Tom Jones. But the sweetest of all romantic squeals is rarely heard anymore. It comes only when a tender-hearted hunk of a guy with big ol' puppy dog eyes makes like a young Frank Sinatra or a younger Elvis Presley – or maybe both. Someone, that is, like Michael Bublé, the trad-pop crossover sensation from the Great White North, who Tuesday night gave the first of three performances this week to capacity crowds at the Greek Theatre. As Tony Bennett might say, if he were being impersonated by Alec Baldwin on "Saturday Night Live": "Boy, I tell ya, that kid's really got something!" You can tell from the squeals. Those that were expelled during Bublé's charming, enjoyable (if a tad jittery) performance were juiced in swooning elation. It instantly struck me where I'd last heard such squeals: a Harry Connick Jr. show not long after he broke big with his anachronistic soundtrack for "When Harry Met Sally …". |
