| Music review: Fun with Ford truck and flag Toby Keith - The country artist lets his humor hang out in Clark County Monday, July 30, 2007 SCOTT D. LEWIS Special to The Oregonian It can be tough tracking the commercial country radio cowboy hat crowd. Is Toby Keith the one that rumor has it split with Faith Hill? No, that's Tim McGraw. The Nicole Kidman guy? No, that's Keith Urban. Renee Zellweger? Nope, that would be Kenny Chesney. Toby Keith's the one who does the stadium-stage Ford truck commercials. But after his 9/11 response hit "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)," Keith was most widely known for his, um, rough and tumble suggestions about foreign diplomacy that involved boots and kicking and sensitive area. These days he falls slightly below the likes of Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson on most scales. The FCC-approved line of lyric from "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" received some hardy support Saturday night when Keith played the Amphitheater at Clark County, as did the string of No. 1 hits he's had for nearly 15 years. Most of these are concerned with three topics: drinkin', lovin' and flag wavin' -- in that order. Keith is likely the biggest of the cowboy crop -- a former football player whose bulging arms apparently rip the sleeves right off any shirt that dares try to cover him -- and he's the funniest. After a pyrotechnics explosion and a shower of shiny, dollar bill-size confetti, Keith plunged right into the title track from his new, self-produced album, "Big Dog Daddy," a charged-up, honky-tonk tune, precisely rendered by his 10-piece band and recalling the spirit of Jerry Lee Lewis. . |
