uble turns on charm for spiffy crowd
Adam Graham / Detroit News Pop Music Writer

In a stark contrast to the chaos of the Vans Warped Tour, which was unfolding just across the street inside Comerica Park's parking lot, Michael Buble put on a massively entertaining show for a sold-out crowd of 5,000 at the Fox Theatre Friday night.

The two crowds couldn't have been more different: While the Warped crowd consisted of scrawny teenagers dressed to depress in T-shirts, torn "whatevers" and tennis shoes, the Buble crowd was far more affluent and spiffed up, and slightly older than their master of ceremonies, who is all of 31.

Buble has taken the adult contemporary world by storm in recent years, and he hit No. 1 on the pop charts earlier this year with his third album, "Call Me Irresponsible." He's an old-school crooner in the style of Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, and though his pleasant but unremarkable voice can't match that of his obvious heroes, he's far more than the hack Harry Connick Jr. his detractors make him out to be.

Buble worked his charm with his engaging stage presence, comedic banter and mock ego tripping, thanking the audience early on for their support -- by bragging about the size of the house he just purchased. He quickly built a comfortable rapport with the crowd, jumping off stage to take a picture with the fans in the first row and later taking a sip off of one woman's beer..
