Big, brawny Toby Keith brings the curtain down
Lambert opens with menace on her mind

He's the swaggering embodiment of broad-shouldered, bare-chested country music, the Big Dog Daddy of the road and just the man to bring down the curtain on Summerfest '07.

Toby Keith entered the Marcus Amphitheater in his usual mild-mannered fashion Sunday night. There were cascades of fireworks, two showers of confetti and rock 'n' roll guitars at full roar.

As the saying goes, the man could swagger sitting down. The larger-than-life, brawny image is up there to see in the 6-foot-4 frame, the muscular arms and the even more muscular music: "How Do You Like Me Now," "Who's Your Daddy," "I Wanna Talk About Me," "Honky Tonk U," and, of course, "Big Dog Daddy." All that chest thumping could get tiresome, except that there's always the hint of a wink behind all the musical trash-talk.

In fact, at various points Sunday, Keith emerged as a belated and unlikely convert to Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign of the '80s. First there was the surprising inclusion of Ringo Starr's "The No No Song." And then there was a lovely community abstinence singalong on "I'll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again."

There were several enthusiastic singalongs Sunday; Keith has arrived at the secure state of stardom where the crowd knows the material well enough to join in at almost any point..
