| Country duo closes fair on a good, not great, note The longtime hitmakers know how to touch all the bases. But amid the fun and video footage, they got bogged down at times. Jon Bream, Star Tribune "Man, this place has changed since the last time," Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn declared Monday at the State Fair grandstand. "You have a weird racetrack designer." Um, the auto racing ended in 2002, and ever since the fair has been trying to figure out what to do at the grandstand on closing night. In 2003, it was the Amateur Talent Contest. The next year it was a free show featuring the has-been Spin Doctors and the not-yet-well-known Gavin DeGraw. Last year's concert with Christian rockers Switchfoot barely drew 2,000 ticket buyers. This time, the fair turned to Brooks & Dunn, who hadn't been at the grandstand since 1999 but are riding high with a leading six nominations for the Country Music Association Awards. A finalist for entertainer of the year probably should draw more than 8,775 people, but it was Labor Day and there's school and work the next morning for most country fans. Certainly, Brooks, 51, was up for the occasion. He's always got the party spirit. He put on necklaces and a lei tossed by fans, danced with a 7-year-old fan and talked about the fair and Labor Day. Ronnie Dunn, 53, seemed a bit blasé -- from his I-forgot-my-hairspray drooping pompadour to his vocal delivery to his terse patter. Nonetheless, it was a good but not great show. Actually, good but not great pretty much describes the career of Brooks & Dunn, who have had a highly successful 15-year run. Over the course of 18 songs on Monday, they touched all the right country bases -- love, divorce, drinking, partying, patriotism, faith and rock 'n' roll. And they proved once again that they know how to dress up a show. Brooks & Dunn buoyed the music with a cool, high-energy video show on a giant horizontal screen divided into 12 panels. Depending on the tune, there were images of monster trucks, Southwestern vistas, burning candles, neon signs, religious crosses, flags waving and Brooks playing his guitar (48 images at once).. |
