Toby Keith plays hard at Hershey
Country superstar Toby Keith closed out the summer concert season at Hersheypark Stadium last night, an early date in his “Hookin’ Up and Hangin’ Out” tour. And indeed, much of his material is about just those two things.

The brawny Keith, in sleeveless plaid shirt (to better show off his biceps) and jeans, took the stage with a no-letup barrage of songs – “Big Bull Rider,” “Honkytonk U,” “Stays in Mexico,” and I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight,” then right into “A Little Too Late” (from his latest “White Trash With Money”) before a brief breath-catcher. His resonant, powerful baritone with its precise vibrato kept pace effortlessly throughout and didn’t let him – or the appreciative, large, rain-soaked crowd – down.

A punchy “Get Drunk and Be Somebody” and a purring “Whisky Girl” followed — Keith displayed his rugged sexiness on the latter, but he rather keeps you at arm’s length. He doesn’t get too involved or too intimate – he’s a bit unattainable, which may explain his appeal. His fleet-footed rap on the insistent “I Wanna Talk About Me” and his beefy turn on the chorus was a highlight of the show’s mid-portion.

Another came when he brought out the co-star of his upcoming film “Broken Bridges,” the big-voiced Lindsey Haun. She sang a duet with him to great effect on the soundtrack’s title song, holding her own with confidence, and carried her lead single “Broken” beautifully. Keith graciously playing sideman.

If you’re talking swagger, though, Keith is the man, and his next few selections were delivered with appropriate braggadocio – “Who’s Your Daddy” (complete with muscle flexes for the ladies), “I Ain’t As Good As I Once Was,” the vivid “I Love This Bar,” and a hilarious “Weed With Willie.”

“Should’ve Been a Cowboy” and “Beer for My Horses” continued the Wild West theme, and he bulled through “How Do You Like Me Now” in complete control, his self-confidence palpable to the back of the stadium. The bawdy “A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action” was pretty self-explanatory and generated a lot of singing along.
