| Kid Rock shows why rap-rock once ruled By David Lindquist Eight years after the release of "Devil Without a Cause," the album continues to provide a reliably entertaining framework for Kid Rock performances. Kid Rock performs Wednesday as part of the Indiana State Fair. The newlywed showed off the tan he acquired while honeymooning with Pam Anderson. - Kevin Martin / The Star Kid Rock • Where: Toyota Trucks Grandstand, Indiana State Fair. • Bottom line: Waking up the echoes of a rap-rock breakthrough. You can hang most anything on "Bawitdaba," the pattern for Rock's once audacious rap-rock vision. "Devil's" opening track launched Wednesday's concert at the Indiana State Fair, where an estimated audience of 5,000 proved the Toyota Trucks Grandstand doesn't have to be filled to capacity to shake with excitement. Newlywed Rock didn't mention his bride, Pamela Anderson, during his two-hour appearance. But he did perform without a shirt to show off the St. Tropez tan he collected around the time of their July 29 nuptials. Detroit native Rock accessorized his upper torso with a piano during the opening bars of "Cowboy," another smash single from the "Devil" era. "I'm the real McCoy," he announced during a preamble that featured cheap shots aimed at Radiohead, Clay Aiken, Britney Spears and Madonna. It's not necessary to tear down other artists when you can deliver the towering funk and rhymes showcased on "Devil's" title track, but Rock's underdog mentality runs deep -- through three flop albums that came before "Devil." In the late '90s, ballad "Only God Knows Why" hinted that more than rap-rock was in store for the man born Bob Ritchie. Subsequent experiments in Southern rock -- "Picture" and "Jackson, Mississippi," as heard during Wednesday's show -- paid artistic (if not always commercial) dividends. Rock foreshadowed his next studio album, which he promises to be a reinvention of classic rock sounds, with renditions of ZZ Top's "Tush," Grand Funk Railroad's "We're an American Band" and Buckcherry's "Crazy Bitch.". |
