| Buffett’s boat plies familiar seas By Jed Gottlieb Friday, August 11, 2006 - Updated: 10:39 AM EST Jimmy Buffett is the richest indentured servant in America. His net worth is greater than most of the tiny island countries he’s so fond of, but he’s still a slave to his fans. He’ll sell out the Tweeter Center - as he did last night - twice a summer until he dies, but he’ll have to play “Fins” and “Volcano,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and “Margaritaville” at every show. For Parrotheads it’s a dream, for fans of spontaneity it’s a shame. Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band fought the fact that they look like vacationing used-car salesmen and certified public accountants. They began with Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” - maybe the world’s second most overplayed song after “Margaritaville” - and quickly ran through many of the mango mogul’s greatest hits, including “Pencil Thin Mustache,” “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere” and “Grapefruit Juicy Fruit.” And the partying Parrotheads loved every minute of it. Not surprisingly, the few times the crowd’s energy dipped was when things got unusual. The night’s highlight came when most of the band exited and Buffett, acoustic guitarist Mac McAnally and ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro held a picking party on “Peanut Butter Conspiracy.” It was casual and loose, but full of energy. A real barnburner, it was the type of thing Buffett should do all the time. Maybe take a summer and forget the tired, old arrangements of the tired, old staples and just jam - of course he’d have to get permission from his fans.. |
