| Buffett beach party has Hoosier touch By David Lindquist The sold-out crowd of 24,000 volleyed hundreds of beach balls and used thousands of leis to accessorize Hawaiian shirts. An agreeable party atmosphere prevailed as Jimmy Buffett doted on Indianapolis -- one of just 17 cities on his summer tour. A show-opening cover of Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl" changed the site of a tryst from "behind the stadium" to "behind the Hoosier Dome." Buffett reminisced about Alan Jackson joining him at Verizon in 2003 for a rendition of "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere." And a version of John Hiatt's "Window on the World" highlighted references to guitar greats Wes Montgomery and Jimi Hendrix playing on Indiana Avenue. When Buffett performed locally in September, Hurricane Katrina had just battered the area of the Gulf Coast where he grew up. On Tuesday, Buffett had so little weighing on his mind that he quoted catch phrases from "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" throughout the show. Of course, a backing band stocked with two ringers may have brightened his disposition. Guitarist Sonny Landreth and ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro added masterful accents to Buffett's tales of coasts, islands and the water in between. Landreth, a slide specialist known for his work with Indianapolis native Hiatt, supplied an authentic swamp moan to "Will Work for Gumbo.". |
