This time, Jimmy memorable
Concert review
BY CHRIS VARIAS | ENQUIRER CONTRIBUTOR

The less a Jimmy Buffett concert attendant gets clocked in the head with beach balls, the more he can pay attention to what's happening on stage. And, as luck would have it, there weren't many beach balls Thursday, a circumstance that provided the opportunity to witness more memorable performances within the two-hour-plus show than probably any other Buffett set at Riverbend from the last 10 years.

The concert was a sellout, as Buffett continues his reign as the king of the Cincinnati summer-music calendar. But this trip felt different, as if it were less about spectacle and more about music.

Maybe ticket pricing had something to do with it. The crowd has always been half of the show, but not this time. Where were all the beach balls that flew through the air at Buffett shows of years past?

Perhaps there's an inverse relationship between beach balls and the cost of admission, because in the pavilion, where tickets were priced at $126 each, the relatively subdued Parrottheads appeared no crazier than a typical Cincinnati Pops crowd.

Whatever the case, the music carried the night. Buffett and the dozen-odd players in his Coral Reefer band dutifully paraded out those longstanding breezy-and-boozy favorites like "Margaritaville," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," "Why Don't We Get Drunk" and the Cincinnati name-checking "Fins." But none of those was a highlight.

Instead, the best moments came with Buffett singing other people's songs. There was his usual turn on Stephen Stills' sea song "Southern Cross," which at this point might as well have been written for Buffett, since he has taken it over and it perfectly fits his hippie-sailor persona. Better yet were a steel-drum peppered take on "Scarlet Begonias" by the Grateful Dead during the encore and a version of Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London." Buffett cut the latter song for "Hoot," the recently released children's film he produced.

Buffett improvised a line in "Werewolves" about Skyline Chili. His habit of pandering to Cincinnati audiences seems unbreakable and can be annoying, but the crowd loudly showed its pride each time he credited the Queen City for starting the Parrotthead phenomenon.
