Concert review: Michael Buble at Chrysler Hall
By FRANK ROBERTS, The Virginian-Pilot
April 12, 2006

Katie Vacher, a 10-year-old, long-haired sprite from Stafford, was ready for her duet with Michael Buble.

As he tore into "I've Got You Under My Skin," he put the microphone in front of her and she took a few choruses. She knew every word, she never missed a beat.

Katie, whose pitch was right on, has been listening to Frank Sinatra since she was 5 years old and easily remembered the lyrics to that song.

These days, "she loves Michael," her father said. So did the enthusiasts who filled Chrysler Hall on Tuesday night, the fans who bought all the concert tickets 11 minutes after they went on sale.

They were not disappointed. "It was a great, wild show," said Judy Gellasch of Virginia Beach. Musically, it was like watching Elvis Sinatra.

Buble handles the microphone Elvis-like, and his phrasing is Sinatra-like. Add to that, the excellent-plus big band sound of his 12-piece orchestra. For swing enthusiasts it was like a 1940s visit to New York's big band mecca of that era, The Paramount Theatre.

The performer, who has sold more than 10 million recordings worldwide, is constantly on the move, at one point moving into the audience, running front to back at the Chrysler.

The theater tickets emphasized NO CAMERAS, but Buble gave the shutterbugs the go-ahead, even running to the rear of the auditorium so the folks there could get decent shots.

The British Columbia native grew up listening to his grandfather's collection of jazz records, and is now recognized as a top-notch jazz artist, sporting a big voice that can be heard around the block.

Buble, who can be heard on the tube doing Starbucks and ESPN poker commercials, dresses in suit and tie on stage as he alternates between putting heart-soul into a ballad and going swingingly crazy on up-tempo songs. Every song is a drama.

He is constantly on the move and, at one point, had the audience moving with him. They stood up, danced in the aisles or where they were sitting and had a grand time.

The yelling and unbounded enthusiasm for this man who sings the great popular songs rivals anything you will witness at a rock or country concert. But the Buble music is classic popular, items from the songbooks of the likes of Dean Martin, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee and, especially, Sinatra.

It is hard to single out favorite pieces, simply because everything he does is beautiful and/or exciting, but a few extra kudos to his versions of "The More I See You," "Try A Little Tenderness" and "For Once In My Life.".
