| Review: Chesney brings high-energy set, tour to city Country music artist Kenny Chesney is always entertaining in concert, striving to surprise his audience with unexpected twists. He successfully did it again Friday night not once, but twice. Chesney brought his "The Radio and the Road Tour 2006" to the Ford Center with opening acts Sugarland and Dierks Bentley. Sugarland, fronted by the talented Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, opened the show before a crowd of 15,000 with the top-selling hits "Something More," "Just Might (Make Me Believe)" and "Baby Girl." The spunky Nettles was nothing but impressive during the group's short set, showing off her voice and ability to get the crowd standing, cheering and singing. That wasn't so all the time for Bentley, though he was loudly appreciated by the crowd. He turned up the guitars to bring a rock feel to many of his songs, sometimes creating a sound overpowering to his vocals. It was a nice change when his band took down the noise level and adapted a bluegrass sound to one of his first songs, "My Last Name." He ended on strong notes with "Come a Little Closer" and "What Was I Thinkin.'" Excitement erupted in the audience as Chesney appeared before the crowd from a platform at the back of the arena. He swung over the crowd to the front to take his place on a stage with three mega video screens that featured a nice mix of videos and live shots. In his trademark short sleeve shirt, tight jeans and cowboy hat, the tanned and toned Chesney worked through his hits from "Big Star," to "No Shoes, No Shirt (No Problems)" and "There Goes My Life." Chesney's freshest single, "Living in Fast Forward," was followed by a medley of his first top sellers including "The Good Stuff" and "Back Where I Come From," when shots of downtown Oklahoma City and the University of Oklahoma campus became his background. . |
