Rapper West dresses up rich instrumentation

Kanye West brought a musical embarrassment of riches to the Colorado Convention Center on Tuesday during a 90-minute set that showcased the pop star's production and fashion savvy, along with his now-notorious mouthiness.

After a fun "Broke Phi Broke" film short, in which West portrayed an eager beaver among a crew of deadbeats, blinding lights announced the arrival of this rapper whom Barbara Walters recently picked as one of 2005's "Most Fascinating People."

West looked rapper-dapper in crisp slacks and a seersucker-style jacket during his opening, "Touch the Sky." He quickly made use of his stage space, strut-skipping back and forth with a confidence he failed to exhibit while touring in support of last year's solo debut, "The College Dropout."

West's expansive live band and string section was tucked behind a sheer screen - initially jarring until those screens became part of the show by reflecting colored light during "The New Workout Plan," or artful black-and-white photography during "Hey Mama."

West used some of his time to harp on favored subjects, such as the media's alleged misrepresentation of his lyrics or a theory he supports about AIDS being invented by the government to control the population.

These hot-button comments seem tailor-made to generate faux controversy and sell albums. But this crowd still ate it up. It helped that the show was free from some of the pacing problems that plagued earlier dates on the .
