| KANYE WEST The hip-hop hero keeps a nearly full house grooving at Grand Prairie's Nokia Theatre By TERESA GUBBINS SPECIAL TO THE STAR-TELEGRAM GRAND PRAIRIE -- In a post-holiday concert that seemed destined to atone for too much turkey, hip-hop hero Kanye West performed Saturday at Nokia Theatre, where he kept the nearly full house moving and grooving throughout his set. The crowd was on its feet, from his sultry Touch the Sky to his latest hit, Gold Digger, to the moving Jesus Walks. Every audience loves its performer, but this crowd seemed especially receptive. West is at the top of his game right now, with a new CD, his second, Late Registration, which sold 860,000 copies on its debut and, most recently, a nomination for GQ's Men of the Year list. But it's probably his emotional defense of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, in a refreshingly unscripted moment on an NBC fund-raiser, including his declaration that "George Bush doesn't care about black people," that has elevated him to hero status for many folks.. |
