| West shows he's still at head of the class Rap star's show rides on success of his hit albums College Dropout, Late Registration By ZHARMER HARDIMON Every so often, an artist comes along with the might and determination to challenge and enliven the sometimes placid and predictable world of hip-hop. Surely such trailblazers as Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z and Lauryn Hill are members of the revitalization team. Observers recognized their oomph a mile away. But no one saw the star quality in new (and most valuable) player Kanye West, who has parlayed his struggle to get in the game into a curriculum on the making of a victorious rap underdog chock-full of theories, problems and metaphors relatable to the common man. Class began with the release of 2004's The College Dropout, which surprised everyone, except West, with its countless accolades and Grammy win for best rap album. This summer heads were spinning again as West — a brilliant producer who's churned out hits for Jay-Z, Common, Twista, Brandy and others — easily escaped the sophomore jinx with Late Registration, an album even better than its predecessor and destined to receive more Grammy love. In celebration of his achievements, West has embarked on his first headline outing, the "Touch the Sky" tour, which touched down Friday night at Reliant Arena to a crowd eager to cheer on the guy who some say is the voice of a voiceless generation. . |
