POP REVIEW: Kanye West serves up social commentary at Nokia Theatre
12:28 PM CST on Sunday, November 27, 2005
By THOR CHRISTENSEN / The Dallas Morning News

"This isn't a regular hip-hop show," Kanye West said Saturday night at Nokia Theatre. Talk about understatement.

With two cellists jamming, one harpist strumming and a slew of avant-garde visuals straight out of a Laurie Anderson concert, it was a far cry indeed from the usual rap-show clichés. Not a single faux gun blast was heard, and not once did Mr. West utter the words "Everybody on the left say 'Heyyyy!' "

In their place were complex, uplifting songs about family, politics and self-esteem: It was part gospel mass, part social studies class, with the 28-year-old Mr. West playing sinner-preacher-teacher and a dozen other versions of himself.

During "Drive Slow," he drifted back to his grade school days, dork-dancing in his bedroom to hits by A-ha and Prince. In "Spaceship," he unleashed a truckload of angst leftover from his teenage days working at the Gap.

In "Addiction" and "Jesus Walks," he was all grown up, but still grappling with various demons: "I wanna talk to God, but I'm afraid 'cause we ain't spoke in so long."

Like most of Mr. West's tunes, "Jesus" had no pat answer or easy solution. His songs revolved around questions – about love, race, poverty and especially crass materialism. From "All Falls Down" to "Gold Digger" to the show-ending "Diamonds From Sierra Leone," he spent much of the show rapping about the real price people pay for their prized possessions.
