| BY ROSS RAIHALA Bands contrast in concert BY ROSS RAIHALA "I got plenty of rest last night," Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo announced from the Xcel Energy Center's stage Sunday night. "I'm ready to rock." The Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, meanwhile, didn't bother talking about rock. He was rock, issuing blood-curdling screams nearly every time he opened his mouth. This pairing of '90s alt-rock bands makes plenty of sense on paper, as each are five albums into careers that interest both aging Gen Xers who were there the first time around and a new generation of crowd-surfing kids. About 14,000 of them showed up Sunday. Performance-wise, though, Cuomo comes off like that painfully shy, nerdy guy in your freshman science class who never changed his jeans and smelled like a damp basement. Grohl, meanwhile, plays the ultra-confident jock, with a big smile and ballads that somehow sound just as muscular as his rockers. Despite Cuomo's awkwardness, he led his band through a show that easily topped the group's sold-out club gig at First Avenue in the spring. It hit all the expected peaks from the band's career, including show highlights "El Scorcho," "Say It Ain't So" and "Why Bother" as well as a pair of covers, Blur's "Song 2" and the Foo Fighters' "Big Me." For the encore, Cuomo played an acoustic "Island in the Sun" on a small stage at the far end of the arena. The band also invited a fan onstage to play guitar — quite poorly as it turned out — during "Undone (The Sweater Song)." And stealing a page from Green Day's tour book, they let the kid keep the guitar. The Foo Fighters rarely allowed such ramshackle moments during their fiery set, a full-on Big Rock Production with lights, lasers, projection screens and all the related trappings. And even though the band's latest album is a double — one disc electric, the other acoustic — the set favored the heavy, pounding stuff. . |
