| Kid Rocks struts stuff for fans at Pepsi By MICHAEL LISI, Special to the Times Union First published: Monday, September 6, 2004 Those two words describe completely Kid Rock's Labor Day eve performance at the Pepsi Arena on Sunday night. The Kid (real name: Robert Ritchie) heated up a half-filled Pepsi, blasting out two hours worth of brash rapcore and country-fueled rock 'n' roll that was cocky, dumb and damn near perfect. Kid Rock has come a long way since busting onto the charts with the gritty rapcore anthem "Bawitdaba" in 1998 and making his mark with the inked and pierced set with a killer set at Woodstock 1999. He's a mainstream maniac these days, singing with Sheryl Crow ("Picture") and lately, country kingpin Kenny Chesney ("When The Sun Goes Down"). He came off bigger than life on Sunday night, helped by an over-the-top performance that at times featured a giant Confederate flag, a giant American flag and more than a few pyrotechnics. Four female dancers, in bikinis and high heels, danced in two steel cages at each end of the stage from start to end. Bigger than life? You bet. The 33-year-old Detroit rocker had fans on their feet for most of the show, screaming and punching their fists in the air in time to the slamming beat of songs such as "Devil Without A Cause," "Bawitdaba" and a killer version of "American Bad Ass." He was as home with the rapcore as he was with countrified ballads such as "Picture" and "Only God Knows Why" -- the latter played by Kid Rock on a white piano -- as fans sang along. Backed by his tight Twisted Brown Trucker Band, Kid Rock kicked it up, paying tribute to AC/DC, Grand Funk Railroad, ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd by playing snippets of their hits. He also covered Dobie Gray's "Drift Away," a song the Kid's former deejay, Uncle Kracker, had a hit with. Vocally, the Kid was in fine form, his raps crisp on "American Bad Ass" and "Cowboy." He can sing as well, offering up impressive versions of "Picture," "Only God Knows Why" and the swampy "Jackson Mississippi." . |
