How does this guy let the Doobie Brothers open for him. They blew the roof off of Jones Beach while Steve Miller made us sit through song after obscure song until he finally decided to play some hits towards the end of the show and encores. What a prick! I guess he sounded good. I'm not sure . . . I was asleep by then.
What the last reviewer wrote. It was exactly my feeling. He opened flat, sounded horrible and there was no energy in the show. I turned around to look at the crowd and it looked like a snapshot...nobody was moving. He transitioned to the blues and that was pretty awesome, I guess I didn't know that side of SM (I'm not a real fan). Seemed like his band was trying real hard but Steve just couldn't keep pace. From the highly starched, pink button down to the very technical way he plays, it was not terribly entertaining. The Doobies, on the other had, were amazing! Two drummers, Skylark on bass and the band really playing to the crowd left me wishing they had just stayed out there the whole night. If it hadn't been for them, the night would have been a waste.
Get Steve Miller Band stuff here
Oh...forgot to mention...he had some 17 year old kid come out a play a few songs with them on sax. He was AWESOME! One last thing...he said he didn't understand why he was so far from the crowd (with a basketball court between "us"). What was with that? He stood behind the mike and away from the crowd by choice, the Doobies were playing to the crowd the whole night, solos and high fives. In his closing comments he said they need to find a new venue on LI. Fine with me...let the Doobies play all night, I don't go to the occasional concert to take a nap anyway.
Thank God for the Doobies! They had everyone dancing in their seats.
Would have loved to hear them play all night! Steve Miller should have known better than to walk on stage after their show and play all the cover songs that he did. It was a flat show. Left before it was over.
Agreed...the Doobies put on a fantastic show.

The Steve Miller Band? ALOT of people paid good money to see Steve Miller perform and they fully (and rightfully) expected to hear music they were familiar with. Instead, after opening with an actual hit (Fly Like An Eagle) he followed it up with a long set of tunes who's only connection with the band was that (as he himself told us in each and every self absorbed introduction) Steve knew the song writer and liked him! Well, goody for him. The audience came to hear Steve Miller Band music and instead got "treated" (subjected?) to a barrage of music that bored and frustrated fans of the many hits he's known for.
Not surprisingly, after about 6 or seven songs in a row that no-one knew (ok, we all knew the Allman Brothers tune, but we didn't come to see them - and they weren't there, it was just another cover tune) guess what happened. People started to leave. A few...then whole rows started to vacate the arena.
The man is an ego-centric fool who turned off a lot of fans to indulge this absurdly narcissistic concert.

Oh well, like I said, The Doobie Brothers were great, the weather was beautiful, the moon looked full, and we got to beat most of the traffic in our rush to escape. At least the night wasn't a total loss.
Wow. First off you people don't know what you're talking about. Yes, the doobie brothers were great as they have been for years but in now way did they take away from the steve miller band's experience. obviously you went to this concert wanting to hear the same 5 songs you hear on the Q all day long. The MUSIC that was played was unbelievable and any fan of music would have to agree. The band played their hits and gave you something extra to remember with amazing solos and great licks borrowed through the generations to have everyone there get the real sence of rock and roll. It was one of the best classes in rock and roll history i took and for all of you music phonies who just wanted to hear the joker and go home after 15min of music you should be ashamed. After reading this think back to how truly superb the music all night was and realize thats how rock and roll is suppose to be. The band had a great time sharing their other songs with us and you should appreciate they tried to show us all something different instead of everything on STEVE MILLERS GREATEST HITS. The concert rocked. PEACE.
Don't waste your money! Steve is a self absorbed idiot!
I went to see the Doobie Bros friday Night at the PNC Bank Art Center in Jersey and I honestly have to say they sound better than when we were in our early 20's (70's) I was blown away!!
My wife came to see Steve Miller and she was totally disappointed in the selection of songs and style. Hey when Steve made his millions and name, it was because we bought all his albums for the songs he turned us on to. Not the stuff he was playing the other night My friend next to me literally fell asleep. People were walking out by the hundreds....good to beat the exit traffic. Steve needs to get off his high horse and take a marketing lesson in demographics. The paying customers are mainly in their forties and fifties and the ones that put him at the top when he was in his prime....the least he could do is play the songs the consumers came there to hear. I thought Steve was smarter than that and aware that his fans are walking out on him. Good Luck!
Good thing the Doobies were on first...we did not have to suffer through half a concert.
I agree 100% with the comments above. I am 24 years old and to be honest was not familiar with how good The Doobie Brothers were live. They were amazing. The crowd was pumped for Steve Miller and it took him about 35-40 minutes to start playing after the Doobie Brothers People next to me were sleeping during Steve Miller. He started off with Fly Like an Eagle and then it was a borefest for 45 minutes.

I highly reccomend going to see the Doobie Brothers live. I would take a pass on Steve Miller. One compliment for Steve miller was that his voice still sounds good.
This is my third Steve Miller concert over the past 10 years. The Doobie Brothers were very good, very loud - but very good. Everyone was dancing in their seats and singing along. Thats why you come to a concert to enjoy a live performance of the music you have been purchasing for many years. Steve Miller opened with Fly Like an Eagle which was off to a great start until the keyboard player decided to do a "rap" version half way through the song. While the "rap" was good - it was unexpected and out of place. I came to a rock concert, not a hip hop concert. Steve Miller played about 6 songs that were not his own, and people were getting upset. In my section, some people left, other people were yelling "play some Steve Miller". I disagree with the person who left a concert about it being just about the "Music". One or two songs out of the ordinary would be fine - but six? And they were totally blues - again, I came to a rock concert, not a blues concert. On a funnier note - did anyone catch the guy, floor level, right of stage, yellow shirt and red pants, long white hair that was dancing like a crazy man? I was getting exhausted watching him. The concert was very long, so despite playing six songs out of the ordinary, you still got your money worth - four hours of concert.
I was very disappointed with Steve Miller Band. The overly long version (about 15 minutes), included that strange rap. People seemed a little weirded out by it. I could perhaps see that in the middle of the show, but not as an opening. The band has 40 years of music to choose from and they do covers? That seemed a little ridiculous. I also didn't like the different arrangement of Abracadabra. I thought the Doobies were great. They did a cover song (Little Bitty Pretty One) and at least it was one that most people in the audience knew.
Promter made the Band set up 20 feet from stage...Said it might rain....Hey Steve isn't a Juke Box ready to play the hits like the record....But some people like Big Macs and Starbucks I guess....Both Bands Rocked
The Doobies were awesome!!!! I could have listened to them all night-and should have!!! They rocked the house! What the hey...we were almost gonna leave 3/4 through SMB's set but just then SM remembered why we all laid down our hard earned cash to see him. The last 15 minutes of his show was the best. The same thing happened when I saw Eric Clapton at Nassau Coliseum and Boz Scaggs at Atlantic City-they decided to do a blues tour and boy was their audience disappointed as they waited with baited breath in the hopes they would hear just one of their fave tunes!!! Needless to say I got tired of waiting and sulked off to the bar to drown my sorrow and listen to their songs on the jukebox. Now that's what I came for. oh, and PS, I did see the santa claus dude with the yellow shirt and the red pants dancing-he was all over the place! We all could have used what he was on...LOL Long live the Doobies!!!
My wife and I got a late start b/c of babysitting issues and I only caught the last half of the doobies. The half I caught was unreal, they sound awesome and put on a high energy show. Everyone that wrote that Steve Miller disapointed is dead on, the opener Fly Like and Eagle was out of place and weird and the covers were just like going to see a bar band. I did not go to get a rock and roll education, just to hear Steve Miller Songs.

He was good down the stretch.

I can understand bands wanting to bring new songs in a show to express creativity BUT 5 in a row and he Steve Miller did backup COMEON people come and pay good money for the hits. Maybe abit of communication to the audience instead of just yelling MORE when your given applause would help. Also when the guitar player is yawning WOW something is missing. I like his music but that is the last concert I go to.
Steve Miller played enough of his hits. They need artistic creativity to keep interested in performing. Not the same old songs over and over. He rocked. He did short change the Doobies with the sound though. They got the short end of the stick as far as the sound.
