Great concert. The understand that a Rock and Roll is about fun. Even their ballads come off well.

Nickelback charms fans in concert

SPECIAL TO THE P-I

In 1974, Bachman-Turner Overdrive was at the top of the Billboard 200. Although several solo artists have led the charts, it would be more than 30 years before another Canadian band would earn the distinction. The band was Nickelback. The album was "All the Right Reasons," its fifth full-length collection of hard-rocking neo-grunge. To date, it has sold more than 4.8 million albums in the United States and more than 7 million worldwide.

MUSIC REVIEW
NICKELBACK with Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin

WHEN: Tuesday night

WHERE: Tacoma Dome

Despite their commercial success, seven Grammy nominations, nine Juno Awards, an American Music Award, an MTV Video Music Award for Best Video from a Film ("Hero") and a World Music Award for World's Best-Selling Rock Artist, the Vancouver, B.C., foursome remains the butt of many jokes and has yet to enjoy even a modicum of critical success.

The reason: Nickelback is an unoriginal band playing recycled rock 'n' roll. The Nickel isn't new, it doesn't reinvent the wheel, but Tuesday night at the Tacoma Dome, it showered fans with love, fireworks, flames, T-shirts from prize cannons and, had the law allowed, the band would have added kegs of beer.

More party than concert, Nickelback used the anthem "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" early in the evening to tie itself to the bad-boy redneck rocker images in the Elton John classic.

Strangely, the band quickly shifted gears after the "sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike" with "If Everyone Cared," a paean to Amnesty International, Nelson Mandela and other individuals who, in the face of adversity and suffering, have selflessly taken up the banner of peace, dignity and human rights.

"If everyone loved and nobody lied/If everyone shared and swallowed their pride/Then we'd see the day when nobody died."

If you found yourself getting choked up or teary-eyed during the ballad, you were not alone. Even the hardest heart had to admire the band for at least 3 1/2 minutes. After all, writing hit songs may come easy to Nickelback, but inspiring the masses with poetic messages of hope is both brave and, in itself, hopeful.

Then, as if proffering the ultimate rock legitimacy card, Nickelback paid tribute to Pantera's Dimebag Darrell with "Side of a Bullet," a song that features, allegedly, the last solo of his life. (It was culled from "Vulgar Display of Power" and "Far Beyond Driven" outtakes.)

Nickelback, however, isn't all about pleasing the men in the audience. Frontman Chad Kroeger admitted "the sound of thousands of women screaming never gets old."

As such, the set was peppered with sentimental power ballads "Far Away," "Savin' Me" and "Photograph" that have been chart mainstays for the band since 2001's "How You Remind Me."

On the streets, Nickelback may be a lot of things laughable, but in concert, they're lovable, charming and fun.
